Access to media

JAMA and Archives Journals (2009, June 3). Easier Access To Media By Children Increases Risk For Influence On Numerous Health Issues. Retrieved from http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090602111814.htm

Dr. Strasburger's topic in this article is about how easy it is for children these days to be exposed to the media. It is a fact that most children watch more tv then they attend school in an average day. The media is a powerful teacher for children. The media tells them how to act and what things are the "in" thing. More people should pay attention to how the media effects children from doing daily tasks.

Televison

Graham, J. (2011). How Television Viewing Affects Children. Retrieved from http://umaine.edu/publications/4100e/

Judith Graham wrote this article to tell how the television is effecting children. The television is taking a lot of the physical activity that children use to do out of there daily lives. Some development processes are not obtain due the excessive television watching. What children are watching is sometimes not age appropiate for them, but if there parents are not watching them then they will watch what they want to watch. Some children act out what they see on the TV. There are other things that children can do besides watch television. They can go outside and play games.

Media's Body Image

WebMD. (2010, February). Body Image and Children. In Building a Health Body Image in Children. Retrived from http://children.webmd.com/building-healthy-body-image-for-children

Do you think the media has a good or bad body image? This article is about how the media plays a role in the way children think they need to be. Some children see the celebrities that are so thin, that they think they need to be that thin to look pretty or be liked. Seeing people so thin and thinking that you need to be that thin can lead to eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. The article states some warning signs that you should watch to see if your child has a negative body image such as Excessive dieting and Frequent comments about the weight of other girls. It also states warning signs for eating disorders like Losing lots of weight, Exercising excessively, and Withdrawing from social activities. I think that the media plays a big role in the way children think they need to be.

Effect on Children

Clay, R. (2003). Unraveling new media's effects on children. Monitor on Psychology, 34(2), 40. Retrieved  from http://www.apa.org/monitor/feb03/unraveling.aspx

Clay's topic in this article is the pros and cons that the media has on children. Some research shows that it is not good for children to watch tv do to the violence, sexuality and advertising. A lot of the research that has been done is on the negative effect on children but there are also positive effects for children. Such as the repeating of episodes that Nick Jr. does. I also believe that there are good and bad things that the media does on children. Sometimes the media helps children.

Why the Revolution will not be tweeted

Think about how you would get people to stand up for what you thought was right without Facebook. The article by: Malcolm Gladwell called "Small Change: Why the Revolution will not be tweeted" is about how a town came together to fight against racism. It was a massive protest. It was all done without e-mail, texting, Facebook, and Twitter. The way the world is now we don't have big protests anymore. We have people just add people on facebook or tweet about it. The way things spread these days are through texting or e-mail. Things get out real quick these days. This is how we get our opinions out in the world today.

Internet or a Book

Would you rather read a book or surf the Internet? I think it is just easier to surf the Internet. The article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by: Nicholas Carr is about how the Internet is affecting us on how we learn and read. It states that most people these days don't pick up a book anymore. They would rather just skim the web to get information. Some people can't sit that long or understand what is being said when reading a book, so they would rather just skim through an article to get the information. The way technology is changing it is just easier to skim through things. It also states that we may be reading more then we did in the 1970s or 1980s, but just in a different way.

Media Effect on Children

This video is about how the violence in the media in seen in children eyes. It states that this could be your child one day and how you should be monitoring what your child is watching on the television. I think this is a great video about how the media is showing children things and how children are acting like it because they see it on television.

"Games" by: Steven Johnson

Johnson, S. (2011). Games. In S. Cohen (Ed.) , 50 Essays (pp. 196-201). Boston: Bedford/St. Martin's

The topic of the essay “Games” by Steven Johnson is video games and how they have been unfairly criticized. He aims for us to learn from books not from video games. He say that video games do help with hand and eye coordination but it doesn't help with us learn how to think about the logical point of view. He cites information from parenting expert Dr. Spock and Andrew Solomon to support what he is talking about. He talks about the good and the bad part of the media in our lives and how they effect us in the way that we learn how to do things. We are declining in reading but increasing in media.

Music plays a good role in infants lives

Bales, D. (1998). Building Baby's Brain: The Role of Music. Athens, GA: University of Georgia, College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The article "Building Baby's Brains: The Role of Music" is a article on how music is a key role in the development of babies brains. It states that if you listen to classical music iti can improve spatial reasoning. It also talks about how if you play an instrument it may help with certain thinking skills. It will help with working puzzel quickly. Some researchers think that musical training helps create a new brain pathway. All kinds of music help with making new pathways of the brain. Music can help with having a positive mood and making it easier to learn things. Some things that parents can do with there children are play music for the child, sing to the child, sing with your child, start music lessons early, and encourage the childs school to teach music.

Children and Technology

I think that children and technology are being introduced to each other way to early. I think that it is funny that some parents give there children phones or music players, so that they behave. I mean sometimes it is okay to give children music players or phones to look at or listen to but i would never give a young child one of there own. It is also amazing that children these days know how to work technology better then I do. I have a niece in my family that has a music player and she get it when they are in public places. Here is a link to another students blog about children and technology.

Present not the Past

The essay “Where I Lived and What I Lived For”, by Henry David Thoreau is about how the world has become so depended on other thing rather then people doing thing themselves. He talks about how we are so into the news rather then find things out ourselves. It also states how we take information to fast, we don’t think before we act. We think that it is better get information on the internet whether then get information from a good source. Sometime, I wonder what it would be like if we weren’t like this, if we would just not use the internet so much. The history of the country is what builds us today, but life today is nothing like what it was back in the past.

"Television the Plug-in Drug"

Television has taken over our lives. This essay is about the way that television was back in the day and how it has changed so much over the years. In this day and age we watch more television then was ever thought possible. It talks about how it use to be families playing family games and having conversations together. Now a days families sit around the television and watch there favorite television show together. It is also that the children are in one room watching television and the adults are watching television in another room. It also talks about how most families these days have more then three televisions in there household. I think that this is so true because in my house we have a television in every room that has a cable outlet including my garage.

“The Machine is Us/ing Us"

I really like the video “The Machine is Us/ing Us.” This video is very informative. It shows how digital text has changed our lives from the past. In the past we just erased and started over, now we have the internet where we can just cut and paste what we want to. The video shows that the internet is much more formatted then thought and it is what we use for daily use. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have the internet today. I use the internet everyday; it is how I do a majority of my homework and how I connect to my family and friends across the country. This video was great to watch.

Video Games

Children and video games are not a good match. I think that children under 10 shouldn’t be playing video games. They need to be doing other things then sitting in front of a tv. All the video games these days are all about killing people or picking up hot girls or driving fast cars. I believe that this is giving the wrong image to children in this generation. Some kids are so into these games that they don’t do anything else beside play these video games and live a cyber life. I wish that we had more educational games for kids to play on gaming systems.

Babies and the media

My niece is 11 months and she loves to watch the tv. She loves to watch all the lights and listen to the songs that are being sung during the tv show. When my sister turns on Nick Jr. she goes straight to the tv. She drops everything that she was doing, and starts watching the tv show that is on. I think that it is ok for kids at this age to watch tv a little because they are really into the lights and sounds. It will get them use to different noises.
